چکیده
Background: To refine an on-hen mite feeding device, ethogram was employed to measure the reactions of hens during a routine experimental procedure (feather plucking) and assess effects analgesic cream on those reactions. Methods: Three groups were used; one treated with EMLA 5% before plucking (“EMLA group”); aqueous (“placebo group”) “no treatment” group. Behaviours measured compared three days: ‘dummy handling day’ i.e. no plucking; ‘plucking day’, left thigh; ‘treatment i.e right thighs plucked post-treatment. Poultry red assays performed examine effect creams rates, mortality fecundity. All data analysed using generalised linear (mixed) modelling approaches. Results: Use demonstrated significant difference in hen behaviours group between dummy day treatment (p = 0.949) alongside reduction same 0.028). There statistically increase from both placebo 0.011) < 0.001). Effect sizes directions similar days ‘placebo’ ‘no treatment’ groups, though not (placebo, p 0.064; 0.069). Mite significantly lower than assay 1 0.029) only. fertility unaffected. Conclusions: The successfully changes observed session procedures. No adverse at 3mg/kg hens. Use analgesia for this improves hens’ experiences trials.

15 صفحه اولWelfare of poultry during transport – a review
Poultry are exposed to a number of concurrent stressors during transportation. It is proposed that thermal challenges (both elevated thermal loads and cold stress) constitute the main threat to the birds’ welfare and survival. The effects of thermal stress may be exacerbated by extended withdrawal of food or water and by exposure to vibrations and accelerations. Existing pathologies and injurie...
متن کاملEffect of Wet Feeding on Feed Conversion Efficiency in Laying Hens during Summer Season
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wet feeding on feed conversion efficiency in laying hens during summer season. The study was carried out on 192 pullets of eight weeks age (distributed to four groups). The feed offered to chicks consisted of starter diet up to 8 weeks of age and grower diet up to 20 weeks of age. From 20 weeks onwards, birds were provided with layer diet u...

Silicas for control of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae
Control of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae is a challenge for organic as well as conventional egg producers. In organic agriculture, control should be attempted by mechanically acting substances (e.g. oils or diatomaceous earth), before acaricides are applied. Diatomaceous earth (DE) without acaricides was at least as effective as DE supplemented with pyrethrum or essential oils and a...
